Linqing Zhu
MSt in Oriental Studies

I pursued an MSt in Oriental Studies at Oxford. My research interests include art theory and critique, modern Chinese literature, art and films. During the one-year masters funded by the Ertegun Scholarship, I completed a thesis dealing with the cinematic poetics of a contemporary Chinese filmmaker, Jia Zhangke, looking into Jia's aesthetic origin and inspiration source. Apart from my academic research I hosted a seminar on Chinese artists in Europe in early 20th century, screened Chinese and Japanese films in Ertegun house, as well as organizing a concert of Chinese piano music in the house. I am very grateful to the opportunity to be a member of the Ertegun community that enabled me to learn from excellent humanities scholars in different fields. I have very much enjoyed my time being in the house.

Life After Ertegun House

I am now a first year DPhil student in Oriental Studies in Oxford. My research focuses on contemporary Chinese film aesthetics. I wish to keep improving my knowledge and contributing to the field. As an alumni member of the Ertegun community I wish to curate contemporary Chinese art exhibitions in Ertegun house, to bring young Chinese artists as well as their works to Oxford. I am also interested in hosting events about Chinese literature and culture in the house, and I will contribute to the community as much as I can.
